The West Kaunala single track is fun. Some sections are fast and flowy, while others are tight and technical. The trail is littered with roots, some fairly large, forcing you to pay attention. At times the trail gets narrow with steep cliffs. You really get the feel of the tropics with all the lush greenery.
Once at the trail head you ride down a dirt road that runs parallel to the Boy Scout Camp until you reach a gate. Hop the gate and proceed down the jeep road. Eventually the jeep road will turn into pavement. It is at this point that you will notice the sign for Kaunala Trail off to the left. It's possible to continue up the paved road and run the loop counter clockwise but you will miss the rewarding downhill run at the end of your ride if you do.
The single track portion ends and dumps you out onto a rocky jeep road. If you head left it takes you to the Kahuku Motorcross Track. This road is used by the military on weekdays and is only available to the public on weekends and holidays. Take a right on the jeep road and head up the hill. It's less than a mile to the gate and paved road that takes you back to your car. The jeep road is steep and will test your endurance. There is a beautiful view at the peak, it's a great place to stop and relax before the long downhill run.
Hop the last gate and turn right onto the paved road. This is a long, fast, twisty decent that you can ride all the way to the ocean.
Add another 6 miles to your ride by starting at Pupukea Beach Park and riding up the road to the trail head
